COURSE OF SPANISH LANGUAGE THROUGH FILM

General Information

The University of Leon offers Courses of Spanish Language through The Cinema. Since 1956, over fifty years of activity, the University of Leon offers courses of Spanish Language that credit our institution as one of the pioneers in this field.

This course is directed to foreign students interested in the learning of the Spanish language and culture through film & video making.
The areas of knowledge of the professors involved are the Spanish Second Language and film & video making.

León is a millenarian city , crossroads of the Camino de Santiago , three hours by highway from Madrid or Coruña and two from Salamanca. With a population of 160,000 inhabitants , the city is perfectly adapted for the learning of the Spanish language and the culture that sustains it. León is a cozy and amiable city that offers visitors a perfect balance between the old medieval city and the modern part, with a great historical and artistic patrimony. The city as well as the province of León both meet excellent conditions to enjoy its artistic patrimony, thanks to its, security and tranquillity, its wealth and variety of landscapes and also of the hospitality and cordiality of its people.

The theoretical classes are taught in the Campus of León and the technical and practice classes are taught in the Campus of Ponferrada.

Student requirements

  • Students with knowledge of basic level of Spanish language (M.C.E.R. /A2: European Common Framework of Reference /A2).

The tuition fee includes:

  • Bilingual Certificates (Spanish/English) granted by the Vice-Dean for University Extension
  • Use of university services (gymnasium and swimming pool, library, video archives).
  • Guided tours inside León and their historical and tourist places.
  • Assistance to students lodging.

Not included in tuition fee (optional) :

  • Pick-up service at Madrid Airport (Help connecting with bus or train to Ponferrada).
  • Transportation tickets Madrid - León - Madrid .
  • Tours inside and outside the Province of Leon (some are free of charge) .
  • Trip to Cinema festivals in Spain.
  • Accomodation or maintenance costs.

LODGING

If you lodging were need, the organization of the Course will help in finding it with the following modalities:

Flats : The price ranges between 120 and 200 Euros per month per person, depending on the location and conditions of the appartment. Other expenses (gas, electricity, heating or water) are not included. The "Programa Vivienda" of the Universidad de León is a free service that offers practical and up-to-date information on the availability of lodgings for rent to students in the city of Ponferrada . León. In equal conditions, the organization of the course, offers this unique service through real estate companies of the city. We also can help finding accommodation in family houses. Other possibility is the Universitary Residence .

COURSE

  • Academic credits: 30 credits ECTS.
  • Study periods: October 2008 to January 2009 or February to May 2009 . 14 weeks each period.
  • Total: 250 hours.
  • Pre - inscription course October 2008 / January 2009 : before September the 10 th 2008 .
  • Pre - inscription course February / May 2009: before January the 10 th 2009 .

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

To Comprehend and use the daily expressions of the Spanish language in general and the specific terms used in the film & video making industry.

The acquire knowledge of local "manners and customs".

Understanding of texts and text production: narration/script.

To produce effective use of the Spanish language through cinema and other means.

Conversation.

To encourage students in team work.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To familiarize students with the Spanish and Hispano-American expressions through the audio-visual works.

To familiarize students with the contents of film & video making.

To produce, shoot and post produce a short film.

CONTENTS OF SPANISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

  • Spanish language, written and oral communication, Spanish Literature, Hispano-American Literature, History of Spanish and Hispano-American films.

CONTENTS OF FILM & VIDEO MAKING

  • Script and direction, Camera and sound, Postproduction of image and sound, Practice (produce, shoot and post produce a short film).

COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES

The Organization of the Courses offer ample programming of activities outside the established timetable. There are free activities and others with a moderate cost: guided visits to monuments of the city and their museums, tours to places of interest of the province ( Las Médulas , Santiago de Compostela, Salamanca, Oviedo, etc.), cinema, trips to festivals of cinema, tours outside the province.

The city of León is located the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula . Bus , train or airplane stops in León .
